In the first years of the war, Italy became a place of refugee for thousands of European Jews. "Foreign Jews" were sent to "domicilio coatto" or interned in "internment camps" (like Ferramonti). Among the refugees were families and hundreds and hundreds of children.

The refugees in southern Italy were liberated as early as September 1943. The others had to survived in hiding. Many were arrested and deported but most most survived thanks to the support of the local population. In July 1944 a first group of around 1000 Jewish refugees (including 200 children) left Italy for Fort Ontario in the United States. After the end of the war, thousands of survivors from Eastern Europe came to Italy on their way to Palestine and crowded the many DP camps in the peninsula.
