Biography
Manfred Degen was born July 19, 1931 in Essen (or Karlsruhe), Germany, to Samuel Degen and Rachele Schwarz. The family was in Naples, Italy. As refugees, in May 1940 they joined the Benghasi Group and went to Libya, hoping to reach Palestine. From Libya they were sent to Ferramonti in September 1940 and then in KZ L'Aquila (Navelli) in October 1941. They survived in hiding during the German occupation. In November 1944 they were at DP Lecce (Santa Maria al Bagno).
