Overview

Before the Second World War around 45,000 Jews lived in Italy (including 5,000-7,000 children).

Under Fascist rule (1925-38)

In the 1930s Italy was ruled by a Fascist regime but no anti-Jewish legislation was enacted until September 1938. In those years, Italy became a place of refuge for many Jews from Germany and Austria.

From the Racial Laws (1938) to the beginning of WW2 (1940)

Many Italian Jewish families left the country as refugees to countries such as North or South America or Palestine. Jewish refugees continued to arrive in Italy from northern Europe and the Balkans.

Italy at War (1940-43)

In the first years of the war, Italy remained a place of refuge for thousands and thousands Jews from Northern Europe and the Balkans. "Foreign" and "anti-Fascist" Jews were placed in internments camps, but the majority of Italian Jews lived in relative freedom. Life conditions were hard in some interment camps (including Campagna and Ferramonti) but no Jew (Italian or "foreigner") was deported to labor or death camps until Sept 1943. The Italian government even allowed the establishment of a Jewish society (Delasem) to support the refugees.

The Italian Holocaust: the German occupation and the Repubblica Sociale Italiana (1943-45)

In Sept 1943 Italy was divided in two parts. The Southern regions were liberated by the Allies (and with them all the Jews in the major southern internment camps). In Northern and Central Italy, Jews (Italian and foreign) were now under German rule and subjected to deportation. Around 8,000 were deported to Auschwitz, some to Bergen-Belsen and other camps. Many (around 6,000) succeeded to cross the Swiss borden. All the others had to live in hiding (by themselves or in area controlled by the partisans). Despite every odds, the majority of Jews survived, with the active support of most of the Italian population and many members of the Catholic church. The Delasem continued to operate in secrecy. Some rescue operations specifically targeted children, especially orphans, like in the case of the Nonantoli Children who were all brought to safety in Switzerland.

Deported at Auschwitz

Around 7,500-8,000 were deported to Auschwitz from Italy (including around 800 children). The CDEC website identified 7794 names. Among them 7222 were the victims and 572 the survivors. Some were refugees from other countries. Only a few of the children (mostly adolescents) survived. Here are their names:

Secondo i dati del CDEC, almeno 110 furono gli ebrei deportati dall'Italia a Ravensbruck. 78 furono le vittime e 32 i sopravvissuti.

Tra i deportati vi erano almeno 19 adolescenti e bambini anche piccoli. 10 di essi perirono al campo, 9 sopravvissero:

Deported at Bergen-Belsen (ebrei libici)

Secondo i dati del CDEC, 409 furono gli ebrei (per la maggior parte provenienti dalla Libia) che furono deportati dall'Italia a Bergen-Belsen. 28 furono le vittime e 381 i sopravvissuti.

Tra i deportati dalla Libia vi erano numerosi adolescenti e bambini anche piccoli. Tutti sopravvissero. See Bergen-Belsen

Nelle ultime settimane di vita del campo giunsero a Bergen-Belsen anche alcuni italiani, in condizioni fisiche disperate, provenienti da Auschwitz o altri campi. Solo pochi furono tra di essi i sopravvissuti, tra cui Arianna Szörényi (F / Italy, 1933), Holocaust survivor.

Deported at Reichenau (ebrei libici)

Secondo i dati del CDEC, 59 furono gli ebrei proveniente dalla Libia deportati dall'Italia a Reichenau. 2 furono le vittime e 57 i sopravvissuti.

Deported at Buchenwald

Secondo i dati del CDEC, almeno 27 furono gli ebrei deportati dall'Italia a Buchenwald. 7 furono le vittime e 20 i sopravvissuti.

Tra i deportati non vi erano bambini piccoli ma solo tre adolescenti, i quali sopravvissero alla detenzione:

Nora Flora Atias, figlia di Jozef Atias e Sara Sarika Maestro è nata in Jugoslavia a Sarajevo il 6 novembre 1926. Arrestata sull' Isola di Rab in Jugoslavia. Deportata nel campo di sterminio di Auschwitz. È sopravvissuta alla Shoah.

Neta Hana Atias, figlia di Jozef Atias e Sara Sarika Maestro è nata in Jugoslavia a Sarajevo il 7 gennaio 1928. Arrestata sull' Isola di Rab in Jugoslavia. Deportata nel campo di sterminio di Auschwitz. È sopravvissuta alla Shoah.

Isacco Mario Baruch (M / Turkey, 1926), Holocaust survivor

Isacco Mario Baruch, figlio di Elia Baruch e Lea Hoba è nato in Turchia a Smirne il 17 luglio 1926. Arrestato a Borgo a Buggiano (Pistoia). Deportato nel campo di sterminio di Auschwitz. È sopravvissuto alla Shoah. Morto a Livorno nel 2013.

Isacco Bayona, figlio di Raffaele Bayona e Diamante Jacob è nato in Grecia a Salonicco il 21 luglio 1926. Arrestato a Gabbro (Livorno). Deportato nel campo di sterminio di Auschwitz. È sopravvissuto alla Shoah.

Matilde Beniacar (F / Turkey, 1926), Holocaust survivor

Matilde Beniacar, figlia di Moise Beniacar e Estrea Levi è nata in Turchia a Smirne il 18 gennaio 1926. Arrestata a Borgo a Buggiano (Pistoia). Deportata nel campo di sterminio di Auschwitz. È sopravvissuta alla Shoah.
