Biography

Cecilia (Genoa, 27 Jan 1926) and Silvia Calderoni (Genoa, 24 Aug 1930) were the daughters of Guido Calderoni and Irma Bassani. The family, originally from Genoa, had moved to Milan. To escape the bombardments, in 1942 they went to live at Santa Margherita Ligure, where they had an apartment they used on holidays. After Sept 1943, the situation became precarious, as their Jewish identity was well known. They fled in search of a safer place. They survived in hiding at Gambassi, a small village in Tuscany. The local priest, don Italo Ciulli, gave them hospitality in the Casa di riposo, run by nuns, under false names. The two girls spent nine months there, from October 9, 1943 to July 1944 with their parents and their paternal aunt (Lidia Calderoni) and her husband (Mario Vitali)--6 people.
