Italian is a Romance language, and the official state language in Italy, and in some areas of Switzerland and Croatia. It is written in a variant of the Latin alphabet.

Italian is the primary language of Scholarship and Fiction used since the 15th century in Italy. Outside Italy, Italian was used in Europe (commonly in the 18th century and less frequently, in 19th century) as an international language of opera and oratorio librettos.

Latin and French (in the past) and English (in more recent times) are the international languages more commonly used by Italian scholars in addition to Italian.
