Angelo Mai

Angelo Mai (1782-1854) was an Italian scholar and Jesuit priest. In 1804 he became a teacher of classics in the Jesuit college of Naples. In 1813 he was made custodian of the Ambrosian Library in Milan, and in 1819 was appointed chief keeper of the Vatican Library in Rome. He won an international reputation for his pioneering work of rediscovering and publishing ancient manuscripts, including the Codex Vaticanus of the Bible (edited posthumously by Carlo Vercellone) and Greek fragments from 1 Enoch. In 1833 he became the secretary of the Sacra Congregatio de Propaganda Fide, and in 1838 was appointed Cardinal.
