1950s

No Italian scholars were part of the team of specialists who worked with the newly found manuscripts, yet the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls generated much interest in Italy. Some of the earliest articles on the Scrolls were published in Italian by Milik and by Italian-Israeli scholar Umberto Cassuto. The Professors at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome, notably, Pietro Boccaccio and Guido Berardi, were directly engaged in the publication of some of the first printed editions of the Scrolls. Catholic Biblical scholars, such as Angelo Penna and Giuseppe Ricciotti, offered original contributions to the study of the manuscripts. Milik wrote his book at the invitation of Giovanni Rinaldi in a double French-Italian edition.

Orientalist Sabatino Moscati offered in 1955 a detailed introduction to the Scrolls from an archaeological perspective. The scholarly works of Burrows and Allegro were translated into Italian and so was the book of journalist Edmund Wilson which also in Italy significantly contributed to popularize the results of the research in the field. After Cassuto the voice of Jewish scholarship is heard through the translation of the work of French Jewish Henry E. Del Medico and the first Hebrew-Italian edition of the Hodayot by Elio Piattelli.

1960s

The first collection of Dead Sea Scrolls in Italian was published by Luigi Michelini Tocci in 1967.

1970s

In 1971 Luigi Moraldi published what would be become for decades the standard edition of the Dead Sea Scrolls in Italian. Other important contributions appeared in Italian by Angelo Penna, Marcello Del Verme, Jan Alberto Soggin, and Angelo Vivian.

1980s

A second, enlarged and updated edition, of Moraldi's collection of the Dead Sea Scrolls appeared in 1986. It was followed in 1988 by the translation of Ernest-Marie Laperrousaz' work on the Essenes.

1990s

As in the rest of the world, the interest in Qumran Studies also exploded in Italy in the 1990s. Many important works by international specialists were translated into Italian. Among the original contributions by Italian scholars were a commentary on the Temple Scroll by Angelo Vivian and a critical edition of the War Scroll by Giovanni Ibba. In 1995 the Associazione Biblica Italiana organized at L'Aquila the first Italian conference on the Dead Sea Scrolls. After producing a critical edition of the Rule of the Community in 1995, Corrado Martone published in 1996 a new, updated and more comprehensive edition of the Dead Sea Scrolls in Italian, based on the work of Florentino Garcia Martinez. Two works of fiction completed this extraordinary decade--a novel by Renato Viglione and a movie by Alessandro D'Alatri.

2000s

Giovanni Ibba and Corrado Martone remained the most active Italian scholars in the field of Qumran Studies.

In 2003 appeared the Italian edition of Gabriele Boccaccini's Beyond the Essene Hypothesis. Paolo Sacchi published a commentary on the Community Rule in 2006.

2010s

In 2011 the Associazione Biblica Italiana devoted a second conference to Qumran Studies, after the one held in 1995.

In 2013-14 Giovanni Ibba edited the first two volumes of a new Italian translation of the Dead Sea Scrolls based on the French edition by Katell Berthelot and others; see La biblioteca di Qumran = La bibliothèque de Qumrân (The Library of Qumran / 2013- @2008- Berthelot, Legrand, Paul / Ibba), edited volume (Italian ed.).
