Bible Translations / Translations of the Bible (see Bible Studies, Hebrew Bible Studies & New Testament Studies)

Overview

The Bible is the Scripture of Jews (Hebrew Bible) and Christians (Old Testament and New Testament, plus the OT Apocrypha).

In antiquity the Bible was transmitted in Hebrew and Greek. Ancient versions were made in Syriac, Latin, Ethiopic, Slavonic, Arabic, Armenian, and other languages. The Latin version (the Vulgate) became normative among Christians) in Western Europe.

In modern times, the Bible was (entirely or partially) translated into the major national" languages first by Christians and then also by Jews.

The 15th century

Among the first printed texts are the translations of the Bible into German (1466), Italian (1471), and Catalan (1478).

The 16th century

In the 16th century the Reformation promoted the use of vernacular versions of the Bible. In Protestant countries we see the appearance of the first "authorized" versions of the Bible, while in Catholic countries the availability of translations was strongly limited.

The 17th century
