"Carefully translated according to the Massoretic text, on the basis of the English version, after the best Jewish authorities and supplied with short explanatory notes"

First American Translation of the entire Hebrew Bible. Leeser had already published his translation of the five books of the Torah in 1845. Leeser's translation became the standard edition of the Bible among American Jews until the new Jewish Publication Society translation of 1917.

Leeser continuously compares and contrasts his translation with "the English version", i.e. the King James version.
