Bible Translations into Russian

Overview

There is memory of two old translations of the Bible in Russian. The first by Franciscus Skorina (1490-1541), was made in Belorusan dialect around 1525 ('Bilblia Ruska"). The second, by Ernest Gluck, was completed at the end of the 17th century. Both translations are lost.

  • 1823 -- First "Orthodox" version of the NT in Russian by the Holy Synod (based on the Greek texts)
  • 1872 -- First "Jewish" translation of the Torah and Psalms into Russian. Published in Berlin, Germany.
  • 1876 - "Orthodox" version of the whole Bible by the Holy Synod (based of the original Hebrew texts)

No translation of the Bible was made during the Soviet period, until the reconstitution of the Russian Biblical Society in 1990.
