Szent Biblia (Holy Bible / 1590 Károli), book (Hungarian)

Szent Biblia (1590) is a book by Gáspár Károli.

Abstract

Called also "Vizsolyi Biblia" (based on the locality of the publisher), the first complete Hungarian translation of the Bible.

The translation has begun in 1586, the printing has begun on 18. February 1589. Károli's translation is based on the Septuagint and the Vulgate, and on the Hebrew text as well. He used the works of several contemporary scholars and his Hungarian predecessors. The edition contains also the Deuterocanonical books of the OT.

Károli's translation was printed in two volumes, in about 800 exemplars, from which 51 are preserved. His work is still a basis for the traditional Protestant piety in Hungary, during the centuries numerous revisions were made. In 1981, a reprint edition was published in 28.000 exemplars.
