Jewish refugees to Switzerland from Italy

Overview

Around 1000 Jewish children managed to escape to Switzerland from Italy after the Nazi occupation in September 1943. Most of them were Italian Jews, but among them were also many refugees who had reached Italy from the Balkans and had been interned in various localities in Northern Italy.

Arrested at the border

Not always the attempt to cross the border was successful. Many refugees from Italy did not make it and had to go back. Over 200 of them were arrested at the border, including around 30-40 children. Most of them were deported and perished at Auschwitz. Among them, only Gilberto Hasson, Liliana Segre and Elena Kugler, are known to have survived the deportation.
