When Theresienstadt was liberated by the Soviet Army on May 8, 1945, they found around 1,600 children. Half of them were children who had spent most of the war at the camp; the other half were children (mostly teenagers) who had only recently arrived at Theresienstadt from other camps (Auschwitz, Buchenwald, Bergen-Belsen, etc.) during the last days of the war.
