They were placed in a children's home in Hannover. On 16 March 1942 they were taken to Theresienstadt on a transport from Berlin. They remained there until Liberation in May 1945.

They were immediately transferred to a children's home in Prague. In August 1945, they were sent to England with the Windermere Children. Initially, Asta declared she was Jewish, while his brothers said they were not. Their mother was later found alive.
