Salome (1st century CE) is the daughter of Herodias, the step-daughter of Herod Antipas.

Biography

Little is known of this historical character, who is mentioned in both Josephus and the Gospels. The New Testament (which does not mention her name) suggests her (involuntary) involvement in the death of John the Baptist. Josephus talks of her life as the wife of two sons of Herod: Philip and then, Aristobulos.

Salome in Fiction

The character has been subjected in fiction to a radical metamorphosis, from an innocent child or indifferent teenager to a powerful icon of morbid female seductiveness (and anti-Semitism).

Salome in Scholarship

Research on Salome is limited by the paucity of historical sources.
