A rebours <French> / Against Nature (1884) is a novel by Joris-Karl Huysmans.

Abstract

The novel contains an elaborated description of Moreau's painting of Salome. It was an important step in the transformation of Salome into the femme fatale of Wilde and Strauss. Salome is described as "the symbolic incarnation of undying Lust, the Goddess of immortal Hysteria ... an accursed Beauty ... a monstrous Beast."
