Ljubljana, Slovenia

During the Holocaust

Many Jewish refugees (including numerous families with children) fled to Ljubljana, Slovenia (then under Italian occupation) from other countries to escape killing and deportation. From Ljubljana they were transferred by the Italian authorities as civilian internees in mainland Italy.

The destiny of the refugees, after Sept 1943, largely depended on their location. Those who were in southern Italy were immediately liberated (in the Fall 1943). The others were in danger of deportation (and in fact many were arrested and deported). Those who were in Central Italy (or fled there) had to remain in hiding until the Summer of 1944. Many of those who were in Northern Italy managed to escape in Switzerland or had to remain in hiding until April 1945.

After liberation, most of them ended up in DP camps in Apulia (Bari or Lecce).
