The Finns are an ethnic group that primarily inhabit Finland and speak the Finnish language (circa 6,500.000 worldwide).

Most Finns today live within the borders of independent Finland (circa 5,500.000). There are Finnish minorities in nearby Sweden, Norway and Russia, and sizeable populations of immigrants and their descendants in the United States, Canada, and other countries.

Famous Finnish People

  • Mikael Agricola (1510–1557) -- Protestant reformer and creator of literary Finnish language)
  • Jean Sibelius (1865–1957) -- World-famous composer of the late Romantic and early-modern periods. He is widely regarded as his country’s greatest composer. His music is often given credit for helping Finland develop a national identity. The Ministry of Education and the Sibelius Society of Finland opened Ainola as a museum in 1974. He has been memorialized by stamps, art, and currency. Since 2011, Finland celebrates its birthday as Flag Flying Day.
