Two movies on Jesus and Christian Origins (The Passion of the Christ and The Da Vinci Code) were among the most successful movies of the 2000s. They both dramatically departed in their own way from mainstream scholarly views, each representing the opposite poles of interpretation. The former was a devotional movie which gained the enthusiastic support of the most theologically conservative Christian groups. The latter was a New-Age fantasy which speculated on Jesus's bloodline. Both movies were not intended to build bridges of understanding, but to divide and polarize audiences.

The most innovative movies on Jesus were produced outside Hollywood. The Son of Man (2005) gave a contemporary African setting to the story of Jesus. Mesih (The Messiah / 2007 Talebzadeh), film was the first movie to depict the life of Jesus from an Islamic perspective, as Muhammed's precursor and foreteller who ascended to heaven before the crucifixion.
