Music played a central role in the 18th century not only as a form of entertainment but as a powerful means of knowledge. An amazing number of oratorios and operas were composed (more than in any other century), dealing with Second Temple Judaism and Christian Origins. The idea of "connecting" the two Testaments to the History of the Jews and the early Church in a continuous narrative was accomplished in music before becoming a standard in scholarship.  The subjects of musical dramatic pieces ranged from the Hebrew Bible to the OT Apocrypha, stories from Josephus, the lives of Jesus and the apostles, and  the development of the early Church.
