History of Research (1600s) -- Notes

Percy's drama (Arabia sitiens) was not only the first early modern play to place the Prophet Muhammad on the stage, but the first to introduce the Qur'an to an English audience, at a time when the Islamic holy text was available in England only in the Latin translation of Robert of Ketton published by Theodor Bibliander. The first translations of the Qur'an in German (1616) and Dutch (1641) also were based on the Latin text through the Italian version of Andrea Arrivabene.

André Du Ryer's French translation of the Quran was the first made directly from the Arabic text. The French text was translated into English (1658) and Dutch (1688).

In 1694 Abraham Hinckelmann published the Arabic text of the Qur'an.

Ludovico Marracci's Latin translation (1698) was also made directly from the Arabic text and distinguished itself for its accuracy.

The approach to the Qur'an by Western scholars remained highly polemical and apologetical.
