Personaggi classici per attori bambini

Alice in Wonderland

Il personaggio di Alice, creato da Lewis Carroll nel 1865, e' uno dei personaggi più' popolari della letteratura dell'infanzia. Nelle numerosissime versioni teatrali, musicali e cinematografiche la parte e' tradizionalmente impersonata da attrici adolescenti o adulte. Per vedere una Alice bambina occorre attendere gli inizi degli anni Cinquanta quando Kathy Beaumont (10 anni) e' scelta dalla Disney come la voce e il modello di Alice nel film d'animazione. In quegli anni alcune attrici bambine impersonano Alice in produzioni televisive: Iris Mann, nel 1950, la stessa Kathy Beaumont nel 1951 e nel 1954 Robin Morgan. Si tratta comunque solo di una breve parentesi in una tradizione interpretativa che non sembra lasciare spazio ad attrici bambine.

Peter Pan

Peter Pan e' la controparte maschile di Alice. Personaggio popolarissimo, nelle numerose versioni teatrali, musicali e cinematografiche e' tradizionalmente impersonato da un'attrice adulta. Per vedere un attore bambino nel ruolo di Peter Pan occorre attendere Jeremy Sumpter in Peter Pan (2003) e Levi Miller in Pan (2015).

Oliver Twist

Il personaggio creato da Charles Dickens e' uno dei più' rappresentati della storia del cinema. Anche per questa parte si preferiscono all'inizio attrici adolescenti o adulte. come Edith Storey (1909) e Vinnie Burns (1912) o poi anche attrici di grande esperienza come Ivy Millais (1912) e Marie Doro (1916).

Il primo Oliver Twist bambino e' nel 1919 l'ungherese Tibor Lubinszky a 10 anni, ma ancora nel 1921 ad Hollywood preferira' affidarsi all'esperienza del diciannovenne Harold Goodwin. Ogni incertezza e' superata nel 1922 dall'interpretazione di Jackie Coogan che consacra il personaggio come veicolo principale di successo per un attore bambino.

Nel cinema sonoro la parte di Oliver Twist e' interpretata una prima volta nel 1933 in maniera fanciullesca e edulcorata da Dickie Moore, allora popolarissimo attore bambino. Ma e' l'interpretazione intensa, sofferta e realistica di John Howard Davies (1948) a definire il personaggio per i decenni successivi.

Con la televisione la storia di Oliver Twist diventa un classico a livello internazionale. Vi si cimentano alcuni tra i migliori attori bambini di tutto il mondo: Adriano Stuart in Brasile (1955), Richard Thomas negli Stati Uniti (1959), Osmar Prado in Brasile (1960), Bruce Prochnik in Gran Breatgna (1962), Gérard Riou (Francia, 1962).

Nel 1960 la versione musical della storia con musiche e libretto di Lionel Bart, fu fatta a misura di attori bambini. Nella produzione originale londinese del 1960 la parte di Oliver fu assegnata a Keith Hamshere, mentre Bruce Prochnik fu il protagonista della produzione originale di Broadway del 1963-64. Nel 1968 l'enorme successo della versione cinematografica del musical (Oliver! riceverà' premio Oscar) rilancia con ancor più' vigore la popolarità' del personaggio, interpretato nel film da Marc Lester.

Negli anni '80 e '90 sI susseguono numerose altre versioni televisive della storia: Richard Charles (1982), Ben Rodska (1985), Alex Trench e Max Reynolds (1997), e Sam Smith (1999). Nel 2001 in Australia si produce anche una serie televisiva, che da' un seguito alle storia di Oliver (qui interpretato da Rowan Witt). Negli stessi anni il musical di Bart ha conosciuto diverse riprese: nel 1977 a Londra; nel 1983 a Londra (con Anthony Pearson) e l'anno successivo a Broadway (con [Braden Danner]]); nel 1994 ancora a Londra (con James Daley)

Negli anni 2000, appaiono due importanti versioni cinematografiche. Nel 2004 Tim Greene offre una versione della storia di crudo realismo in cui Twist (Jarrid Geduld) e' un bambino di strada nel Sud Africa dell'epoca contemporanea. Anche la versione di Roman Polanski del 2005, pur tornando all'ambientazione originale, va nella direzione di un approccio piu' realistico, con Barney Clark come protagonista. Lo stesso anno la BBC celebra il 35 anniversario del musical con uno speciale televisivo che ha per protagonista l'attore-cantante bambino Joseph McManners.

Nel 2007 William Miller offre la più' recente interpretazione del personaggio in una coproduzione televisiva UK-USA. Anche il musical conosce due importanti riprese, nel 2009 a Londra (con Tom Rogers e Gwion Wyn Jones) e nel 2011 con un tour in varie fitta' della Gran Bretagna (con Harry Polden, Sebastian Croft, Joseph Bennett, Gwion Wyn Jones)

Pinocchio

Pinocchio e' un burattino di legno che solo alla fine della storia diventa un bambino. Per questo il personaggio creato nel 1883 dalla fantasia dello scrittore italiano Carlo Collodi si e' prestato soprattutto per versioni a cartoni animati o a pupazzi, a cominciare da quella celeberrima della Disney (1940). Nelle numerose versioni teatrali, cinematografiche e musicali della storia, Pinocchio e' stato più spesso interpretato da attori comici adulti, da Ferdinand Guillaume nel 1911, a Roberto Benigni nel 2002.

Il primo Pinocchio-bambino e' stato Alessandro Tommei, "in costume di burattino", nel film Le avventure di Pinocchio diretto da Giannetto Guardone nel 1947. Il make-up limita le capacita' espressive del bambino-attore e la naturalezza della recitazione. Per ovviare a questi problemi Luigi Comencini immagina nel 1972 che Pinocchio prenda da subito sembianze umane, per tornare burattino solo quando si comporta scorrettamente. Il grandissimo successo dello sceneggiato e del suo protagonista bambino Andrea Balestra dimostra come la parte di Pinocchio possa essere adattata alle capacita' di un attore bambino. Che questa sia la strada giusta e' reso evidente dal fallimento del tentativo della versione del 1997, dove al protagonista [[ ]] vengono date sembianze di pupazzo con immagini computerizzate con l'unico risultato di renderlo irriconoscibile e totalmente inespressivo, mentre di nuovo la magia si riaccende quando gli effetti speciali lasciano tutta la naturalezza di interprete al protagonista, Haley Joel Osment, nei panni di un robot-bambino che come Pinocchio e' in cerca di diventare bambino. La miniserie televisiva italo-britannica, interpretata da Robbie Kay, torna quindi nel 2009 all'idea di Comencini, anche se con risultati meno convincenti.

Interpreti

Il primo Lucignolo della storia del cinema e' l'attore franco-italiano Natalino Guillaume in Pinocchio (1911) in un cast di attori adulti, in cui il personaggio del protagonista era interpretato dal fratello Ferdinand Guillaume. Nel 1940 nella versione animata della Disney la voce di Lucignolo fu quella del ventenne Frankie Darro, un famoso ex attore bambino, che fu chiamato a ricoprirne il ruolo anche alla radio nella presentazione della storia il giorno di Natale 1939.

Per vedere il primo Lucignolo-bambino si deve attendere Guglielmo Selvaggio nella sua unica interpretazione cinematografica nel film Le avventure di Pinocchio diretto da Giannetto Guardone nel 1947.[2]

Nel 1972 nella miniserie televisiva Le avventure di Pinocchio, il regista Luigi Comencini affida la parte a Domenico Santoro, un ragazzino da lui scoperto" in un'inchiesta sul lavoro minorile a Napoli (I bambini e noi, 1970), dando al personaggio di Lucignolo una rilevanza da protagonista al fianco del Pinocchio di Andrea Balestri.

Tom Sawyer e di Huckleberry Finn La prima volta che i personaggi di Mark Twain vengono interpretati, nel 1917 e 1918, lo sono da due attori ormai più che ventenni, Robert Gordon (Huck) e Jack Pickford (Tom). e da attrice adolescente Clara Horton. Huckleberry Finn" (1920) e' il primo lungometraggio in cui i ruoli dei protagonisti siano interamente affidati a ragazzi adolescenti.

Little Lord Fauntleroy

Cedric Errol e' il bambino protagonista del romanzo Little Lord Fauntleroy, pubblicato dalla scrittrice inglese Frances Hodgson Burnett nel 1885.

Nel cinema muto il primo ad interpretare il personaggio fu l'attore bambino inglese Gerald Royston nel 1914, seguito nel 1918 dall'attore bambino ungherese Tibor Lubinszky. A Hollywood invece la storia divenne nel 1921 uno dei successi dell'attrice Mary Pickford, allora quasi trentenne ma specializzatasi da anni in parti di bambino.

La prima versione sonora fu interpretata dall'attore bambino anglo-americano Freddie Bartholomew nel 1936. Da allora il ruolo e' sempre stato ricoperto da attori bambini per il cinema o, più frequentemente, per la televisione: Rafael Neto in Brasile (1957), Sandro Pistolini in Italia (1960), Manfred Kunst in Germania (1962), Gøsta Hagenlund in Norvegia (1966), Glenn Anderson in Gran Bretagna (1976), Ricky Schroder negli Stati Uniti (1980), Jerry Supiran negli Stati Uniti (1982), Michael Benz in Gran Bretagna (1995), Aleksey Vesyolkin in Russia (2003).

Una versione della storia "al femminile" e' stato interpretata nel

Anche in questo caso la prima persona a cimentarsi con il doppio ruolo e' una attrice adulta, Marguerite Clark, ma specializzatasi anche in parti da bambino/a. Il primo attore bambino a interprete bambino e' nel 1920 l'ungherese Tibor Lubinszky. Nel 1937 risale la prima e a tutt'oggi più famosa versione della storia, l'unica a poter mettere in campo una autentica coppia di attori gemelli Billy e Bobby Mauch

David Copperfield

Nel romanzo David Copperfield del 1849-50, Charles Dickens ripercorre per intero la vita del protagonista, dall'infanzia alla maturità. Il personaggio si rivelerà' uno dei principali veicoli di successo per attori bambini fin dalle origini del cinema.

Il primo David bambino nel 1911 e' una ragazzina di 13 anni (Flora Foster), ma gia' nel 1913 la parte e' affidata a un attore bambino (Eric Desmond = Reginald Sheffield). Da allora diventa una parte classica per attori bambini, in una successiva versione muta interpretata da Martin Herzberg (Danimarca, 1922) e quindi in quella sonora che ha come protagonista Freddie Bartholomew (USA, 1935) che decreta il successo del personaggio a livello internazionale.

Nel secondo dopoguerra, David Copperfield bambino diventa un personaggio ricorrente negli sceneggiati televisivi, usualmente in supporto ad un attore che ne interpreta poi la parte da adulto come gia' di norma nelle versioni precedenti (solo nel primo sceneggiato americano del 1954, le due parti sono entrambe interpretate dal diciottenne David Cole). Tarzan, Mowgli, il bambino selvaggio

Il mito del bambino cresciuto nella foresta e' un archetipo tra i più comuni nella letteratura popolare, fin dall'antica mitologia. Non stupisce quindi che lo si ritrovi con frequenza nel cinema sin dai primordi.

"Tarzan"

Nel primo film su Tarzan ( l'attore Gordon Griffith offre una interpretazione così convincente e "naturale" di Tarzan bambino da essere chiamato ancora a ripetere la parte nel sequel e ancora nel 1920, questa volta nei panni del "figlio di Tarzan", destinato a ripetere nella giungla l'esperienza del padre. Il pubblico risponde in maniera così entusiastica che nei numerosi film su Tarzan, anche in quelli incentrati sulla sua vita da adulto nella giungla ci si preoccupa di affiancargli un bambino. Il più' famoso e' certamente Johnny Sheffield che come "Boy", figlio adottivo di Tarzan e Jane, e' presente dal 1939 al 1947 a ben 8 film di Tarzan da Tarzan Finds a Son! a al fianco di [[ ]]. La parte di figlio adottivo fu ripresa da Tommy Carlton (Tarzan' Savage Fury, 1952) e due film del 1958 da Ricky Sorensen, ora sotto il nome di "Tartu", al fianco del nuovo Tarzan Gordon Scott. Un personaggio in tutto simile a quello del "figlio di Tarzan" bambino e' interpretato da Sam Huntington nel film Jungle 2 Jungle(1997)

A differenza di Tarzan, Mowgli non e' un bambino europeo trapiantato in un ambiente esotico ma un bambino locale cresciuto nella giungla. Offre quindi ad attori di origine non-europea l'opprtunita' di un ruolo protagonistico, a cominciare da Sabu Dastagir nel 1937 nel film Elephant Boy (che poi interpretera' un Mowgli gia' adulto in Jungle Book, 1942). In the 1994 film adaptation he was played by Sean Naegeli as a kid and later throughout the film he was played byJason Scott Lee.

In The Second Jungle Book: Mowgli and Baloo he was played by Jamie Williams. In The Jungle Book: Mowgli's Story he was played by Brandon Baker. Mowgli will played by Rohan Chand in the Warner Bros. film Jungle Book: Origins which will come out in 2017.

The Lion King: The musical Simba interpretato per la prima volta da Scott Irby-Ranniar (Broadway Production, 1997) e Luke Youngblood (London Production, 1999) e quindi da una lunga serie di attori-cantanti bambini in uno dei musical di maggior successi di tutti i tempi.

Agli antipodi del mito del bambino che immerso nella natura la conquista con la sua innocenza e intelligenza, sono alcuni film che più realisticamente puntano sugli effetti di regressione psicologica e sociale determinati dall'abbandono. Ne "Il bambino selvaggio" (1970) di François Truffaut, il protagonista Jean-Pierre Cargol ha perduto i suoi tratti umani ed e' incapace di reinserirsi nella società umana. Sulla stessa linea si collocano le due versioni cinematografiche del romanzo di William Golding, Il signore delle mosche (1952), in cui un gruppo di ragazzi inglesi approdato in un isola deserta velocemente regredisce ad uno stato umano sempre più primitivo. Tra gli interpreti della versione inglese del 1963 si distinguono: James Aubrey (Ralph); Tom Chapin (Jack) e Hugh Edwards (Piggy). Nel remake americano del 1990 i protagonisti sono Balthazar Getty (Ralph), Chris Furrh (Jack), e Danuel Pipoly (Piggy).
