Survey of films and documentaries on Mary of Nazareth.

Overview

Mary appears virtually in all movies based on the Life of Jesus or on the Passion of Jesus, even beyond the role given to her by the Gospel narratives. In its adaptation of the Gospel of Matthew, for instance, Pier Paolo Pasolini gave to Mary such an intense and personal role that he asked his own mother to play the part, even though Mary is absent in the Passion narrative of the Gospel of Matthew; see Il vangelo secondo Matteo (1964 Pasolini), film.

Mary has a prominent role of protagonists in the narratives that focus on the Nativity of Jesus. A few movies have been specifically devoted to the Life of Mary of Nazareth; all of them are devotional, with the only conspicuous exception of Je vous salue, Marie (1985 Godard), film.
