The iconographic changes in the representation of Moses in Christian art follow very closely those of Jesus of Nazareth. Moses also is at the beginning depicted as a beardless young man in a classical dalmatic and pallium. By the 10th century, he is now an old man with a beard, holding his rod. Some episodes of the life of Moses became particularly popular, notably, Child Moses, the Burning Bush, the Crossing of the Red Sea, the Fall of the Manna, the Water from the Rock, the Ten Commandments, the Brass Serpent and in the New Testament, the Transfiguration of Jesus.

The now "traditional" image of Moses was the one inherited by the first movies. Gradually however Moses has become young again in order to project the image of a strong and energetic leader.
