According to Jewish (Christian, and Islamic) traditions, Moses was the prophet and religious leader who led the people of Israel out of Egypt and to whom God revealed the Torah on Mount Sinai.

The iconographic changes in the representation of Moses in Christian art follow very closely those of Jesus of Nazareth. Moses also is at the beginning depicted as a beardless young man in a classical dalmatic and pallium. By the 10th century, he is now an old man with a beard, holding his rod. Somehow combining the two images, Michelangelo portrayed an "old" bearded Moses with a vigorous, "classical" body.

The episodes of the life of Moses that were more often depicted are: Child Moses, the Burning Bush, the Crossing of the Red Sea, the Fall of the Manna, the Water from the Rock, the Ten Commandments, the Brass Serpent and in the New Testament, the Transfiguration of Jesus.

The "traditional" image of the "old" Moses was the one inherited by the first movies. Gradually however Moses has become younger and younger on the silver screen and on television, again in order to adjust to the sensitivity of contemporary audiences and project the image of a strong and energetic leader.
