At the very end of the 19th century, it all started with the reenactment and filmization of scenes from the ancient Passion plays performed in some European villages like Horitz/Horice in Bohemia [Czech Republic] and Oberammergau in Bavaria [Germany]. Then the filmmakers felt free to recreate episodes from the life of Jesus, following the traditional Roman Catholic iconography and introducing for the first times special effects (see Méliès 1899).

Due to the technical limitations of the age, these first films were all "short films." The Horitz Passion Play (1897) was a "feature film" only in the sense that it was presented in an hour-and-a-half exhibition that also included projected slides, a lecture, organ music, and sacred hymns.
