The 1940s opened with one of most infamous films in the history of cinematography, the Nazi propaganda movie Der ewige Jude (1940). Ironically an Italian movie with the same title by Goffredo Alessandrini in 1948 was among the very first to address the tragedy of the Holocaust and the death camps.

During the years of the Second World War there were no resources for biblical productions, except in neutral Mexico, where 4 major feature films were produced in the 1940s, dealing with Jesus, Mary of Nazareth, Mary Magdalene, and Christian Origins.

When in 1946 the BBC resumed its regular TV programs, a second live version of Caesar's Friends was the first biblical play aired on 1 May 1947 with some members of the original 1939 cast. Soon, it became a tradition to broadcast on television biblical plays around Christmas and Easter.

In 1948 great controversy arose when Federico Fellini and Anna Magnani gave a contemporary, non-conformist twist to the story of Mary's pregnancy in Il miracolo, directed by Roberto Rossellini.
