German is a West Germanic language, and the official state language in Germany and Austria, as well as in some areas of Switzerland, Italy, and Africa. It is written in a variant of the Latin alphabet.

German is the primary language of Scholarship and Fiction used since the 15th century in Germany and Austria. German has also been widely used (especially in the 19th and 20th century) as an international language of scholarship and literature.

Latin (in the past) and English (in more recent times) have been international languages also used by German-speaking scholars and authors in addition to their native language.
