French scholarship played a central role in the discovery and early study of the Dead Sea Scrolls.

1950s

Roland de Vaux in Palestine and Andre Dupont-Sommer and Jean Carmignac in France were the leading French scholars of the period. They all supported the Essene hypothesis and yet their forceful personalities made them often engage in sharp debate.

In 1958 Jean Carmignac founded the Revue de Qumran, the first journal to specialize in the study of the Dead Sea Scrolls.
