History of Research (2010s) -- Notes

  • For the first time a Muslim author, Reza Aslan, entered the scholarly debate on the Historical Jesus by reviving the hypothesis of Jesus as a Zealot.
  • The scholarly debate focuses in particular on the development of early Christology. The question "How Jesus became God" leads to rethink the concept of "divinity" in antiquity. In his work, Bart Ehrman emphasizes the greater and greater degree of divinity attributed to Jesus by early Christian authors, while Gabriele Boccaccini points out that "being uncreated" (not divinity, or worship) is the feature that separated the only God from God's creatures and ultimately made Jesus "God" with the Gospel of John.
