Heinrich Degen was born January 28, 1936 in Vienna, Austria, to Karol Diener and Elza Ringelbaum. Refugees in Italy, the family went to Libya as part of the [[Benghasi Group]]. From Lybia they were sent to [[Ferramonti]] in September 1940 and then in [[KZ Orsogna]] (near Chieti) in October 1941. They survived in hiding during the German occupation.
