Finnish language -- History of research -- Notes

The New Testament was the first major book published in Finnish language. Mikael Agricola worked on this project for more than ten years, since 1537. He had not only to translate the text but also to create a new language.

The complete edition of the Bible in Finnish appeared in 1642, translated from the original languages by a team of Finnish scholars and published under the patronage of Queen Christina of Sweden. The work was periodically revised and updated, most significantly, by Henrik Florinus in 1685 and Anders Lizelius in 1776.

A biblical Finnish scholarship developed only in the early 20th century.

At the beginning of the 20th century playwright Johannes Linnankoski published three plays based on stories from the Old Testament.

The first translation of the Qur'an in Finnish was published in 1995 by Jaakko Hämeen-Anttila.
