Abstract

Based solely on the gospel of Matthew and dedicated “alla cara, lieta, familiare memoria di Giovanni XXIII” by the Marxist director, is one of the universally acknowledged masterpieces of religious cinema. Attempt to make Jesus more realistic and less a Hollywood concoction involves non-professional actors from a peasant location in Southern Italy in a choral and touching reenactment of the life of Jesus as the advocate of the poor and oppressed.
