Women Authorship (1850s) -- History of research -- Overview In the second half of the 19th century, historical novels of biblical subject became a very popular literary genre. It was a welcomed opportunity for educated women who in some countries had now access to education and had historical and theological interests and training but could not express themselves in the academia or in the clergy which remained male domains. This explains the great number of women engaged in writing historical novels or historical textbooks "for a juvenile audience"--the education of children being another field, where the contribution women was now commonly accepted. By the end of the century women were no longer content to be confined in such peripheral roles but struggled to be recognized as scholars and to be directly engaged in scholarly discourse. The Women's Bible ( ), promoted by Elizabeth Cady Stanton, was the first project to openly challenge the male monopoly in the field. Matilda Joslyn Gage and Elizabeth Wormeley Latimer Twin sisters Agnes Smith Lewis and Margaret Dunlop Gibson were the first women to give a contribution to philological research in ancient Judaism and Christianity. Fluent in ancient Greek and Syriac, they traveled extensively in the Middle East. In 1892 they discovered at Saint Catherine's Monastery the earliest Syriac version of the Gospels known thus far. Agnes and Margaret also catalogued the monastery's extensive collection of Syriac and Arabic manuscripts. References
