Overview

Mary appears virtually in all movies based on the Life of Jesus or on the Passion of Jesus, even beyond the role given to her by the Gospel narratives. In its adaptation of the Gospel of Matthew, for instance, Pier Paolo Pasolini gave to Mary such an intense and personal role that he asked his own mother to play the part, even though Mary is absent in the Passion narrative of the Gospel of Matthew; see Il vangelo secondo Matteo (1964 Pasolini), film. Similarly, South African filmmaker [[ ]] had his own wife and distinguished black actress and singer Pauline Malefane play the part, making her a powerful co-protagonist of The Son of Man (2005 Dornford-May), film.

For obvious reasons Mary has a more prominent role of protagonists in the narratives that focus on the Nativity of Jesus. It is in this kind of movies, more than in any other, that is more noticeable the transformation of the character in recent decades, from a passive and submissive mother and wife to a young, energetic woman ready to take her destiny in her own hands.

Only a few movies have been specifically devoted to the Life of Mary of Nazareth; all of them are strictly devotional in purpose, with the conspicuous exception of Je vous salue, Marie (1985 Godard), film, which offered a non-conformist portrait of Mary in a modern setting.
