Overview

As a key character in the narrative, Judas Iscariot appears in virtually all Jesus movies. Sometimes, the story is seen from his point of view and the reasons for his betrayal are explored.

The group of films, in which Judas Iscariot is the protagonist, includes: Le baiser de Judas (starring Jean Mounet-Sully, 1909); Giuda (Oreste Grandi, 1911); El beso de Judas (Rafael Rivelles, 1954); Witness to Yesterday: Judas Iscariot (Donald Davis, 1974); Il bacio di Giuda (Giorgio Algranti, 1988); Gli amici di Gesù: Giuda (Enrico Lo Verso, 2001); Judas (Johnathon Schaech, 2004); Judas (Norman Reedus, 2011); and Histoire de Judas (Rabah Ameur-Zaïmeche, 2015).

In other movies Judas Iscariot has a very relevant role, notably, in King of Kings (starring Rip Torn, 1961), Jesus Christ Superstar (Carl Anderson, 1973), and The Last Temptation of Christ (Harvey Keitel, 1988). In these movies Judas Iscariot is introduced as the disciple closest to Jesus.

Performing Judas Iscariot (cinema & television)

The first actor to be credited as Judas Iscariot was Frank Gaylor in The Passion Play of Oberammergau (1898), but it was Jean Mounet-Sully (1909) and Oreste Grandi (1911) who fist played the character in the leading role. Among the most famous actors who played the part in a supporting role in those years are George Larkin (1912), Robert G. Vignola (1912), Alexander Granach (1923), and others. In 1927, Cecil DeMille asked Jewish actor Joseph Schildkraut to play the role, and gave him a distinctive personality as an ambitious zealot and former lover of Mary Magdalene.

Judas returned to be the protagonist with Rafael Rivelles (1954). Once again, in 1961 Rip Torn revived the role as a zealot, friend of Barabbas.

In the 1970s, Judas was made co-protagonist of the rock opera "Jesus Christ Superstar." Jon English created the role on stage, but it was African-American actor and singer Carl Anderson who became an international sensation.

After Donald Davis (1974) and Giorgio Algranti (1988), another memorable performance was offered in The Last Temptation of Christ by Harvey Keitel who introduced Judas as Jesus's closest friend and advisor. This is a predominant interpretative trend in recent movies, where Enrico Lo Verso (2001) and Rabah Ameur-Zaïmeche (2015) stress the friendship between Jesus and Judas.

Judas returned to be Jesus's main political antagonist with Johnathon Schaech in "Judas (2004).

A new generation of interpreters of Judas in "Jesus Christ Superstar has emerged in the last decades, from to Jérôme Pradon (2000) to Tim Minchin (2012), and Jason Bouman (2013).
