History and Religion of Second Temple Judaism -- The Women's Experience (2018 Boccaccini), course
History and Religion of Second Temple Judaism -- The Women's Experience is a course offered by Gabriele Boccaccini in the Winter 2018.
Description
Women have shaped religion much more deeply than generally recognized, as active members and leaders in their communities. The course will explore the contribution given by women to ancient Judaism and Christian Origins. We will deal with the powerful and the powerless--queens and rulers as Salome Alexandra, Mariamne, Salome, and Berenice, as well as the everyday life of women and their involvement in the diverse religious and social movements of their time. The study will be done in the context of a general introduction to Second Temple Judaism, the period that by Jews is often described as the one "between the Bible and the Mishnah," and by Christian as "Judaism at the Time of Jesus and the New Testament."
