Amahl and the Night Visitors (1952 Schippers, McIver / @1951 Menotti), American (TV) production (opera)
Amahl and the Night Visitors (1952) is an American TV production of Amahl and the Night Visitors (1951 Menotti), opera, conducted by Thomas Schippers, with Giancarlo Menotti (stage director).
Abstract
The 1951 premiere had made Menotti's opera an instant success and a popular Christmas classic, widely performed on stage and television. The 1952 production was identical to the 1951 production(s), except for a significant change--Bill McIver had replaced Chet Allen as the protagonist.
Bill McIver will be Amahl again in three more live TV broadcastings (20 December 1953; 19 December 1954; 25 December 1955) and one New York stage performance (1 April 1954). The 1955 TV production was video-recorded; see Amahl and the Night Visitors (1955 Schippers / @1951 Menotti), American (TV) production, video recording (opera).
