The King of Kings (1927 DeMille), film
The King of Kings (1927) is a silent film directed by Cecil B. DeMille.
Abstract
Regarded for decades as the finest telling of the story of Jesus on film, set expectations of how the movies would handle the Gospels: sex, sin, innocent children, and extreme reverence for Jesus. Remarkable for its time is the sensitive attention to avoid any element of anti-Semitism, by stressing explicitly how the responsibility for the death of the death of Jesus lies on the High Priest alone and not on the entire Jewish people. Starring H.B. Warner (Jesus), Dorothy Cumming (Mary), Ernest Torrence (Peter), Jacqueline Logan (Mary of Magdala), Joseph Schildkraut (Judas Iscariot), Victor Varconi (Pontius Pilate), Rudolph Schildkraut (Caiaphas), and Michael D. Moore (young Mark).
Editions and translations
Produced in the United States (1927). Premiered at Gaiety Theatre in New York on 19 April 1927. Enjoyed immediate, international success, being subtitled in two dozen languages.
