According to later Christian traditions, Veronica was the name of a woman who gave her veil to Jesus on his way to Golgotha that he might wipe his forehead, and received it back with the image of his face miraculously impressed upon it.

Overview

There is no reference to the episode in ancient Christian sources. The legend arose in connection with the belief that the "True Image" of Jesus could have been preserved.

In medieval time the character of Veronica took a life of her own as the wife of Zacchaeus and one of the first Christian missionaries in France.
