According to later Christian traditions, Veronica was the name of a woman who gave her veil to Jesus on his way to Golgotha that he might wipe his forehead, and received it back with the image of his face miraculously impressed upon it.

Overview

There is no reference to the episode in ancient Christian sources. The legend arose in connection with the belief that the Holy Face or "True Image" of Jesus could have been preserved.

In medieval time the character of Veronica took a life of her own as the companion of Joseph of Arimathea or the wife of Zacchaeus and one of the first Christian missionaries in France (and England).

In the visionary work of Anne Catherine Emmerich, as well as in The Passion of the Christ (2004 Gibson), film, it is claimed that the true name of Veronica was Seraphia.
