According to Christian traditions, the Holy Face of Jesus of Nazareth has been preserved in some relics, notably, the Image of Edessa, the Veil of Veronica, and the Shroud of Turin.
Overview
Earliest devotion to the Holy Face was related to the Image of Edessa and the Veil of Veronica, which were believed to be miraculous imprints left by Jesus himself and preserved by his disciples. Only after the advent of photography it became possible to observe the image of the Holy Face in the Shroud of Turin. The negative developed on May 28, 1898 by amateur Italian photographer Secondo Pia soon became the most popular icon of the Holy Face.
