In 1817 composer Peter von Winter set to music a libretto by Felice Romani, based on Voltaire's play. It is the first and only opera ever staged on Muhammad.

Tenor Domenico Donzelli, one of the leading opera singers of his time, has been the only singing voice of Muhammad in the history of music.
