The development of the figure of Muhammad in fiction has been limited by religious concerns, in the islamic tradition, against any "representations" of the Prophet. The only examples of the presence of Muhammad in performing arts come from non-Muslim authors. Only in literature we see the development of a tradition of successful novels, some of which have had vast circulation in recent years among non-Muslims.

The role of fiction should not underestimated, however. In spite of their shortcomings and prejudices, works like "Arabia sitiens" (1601) and Le fanatisme; ou, Mahomet le prophete (Mahomet the Prophet / 1741 Voltaire), play were among the first ones that contributed to spread the knowledge of Islam in Western culture.
