Overview

As a key character who played a small yet important role in the Passion narratives, Joseph of Arimathea is present in virtually all major Jesus movies, in particular in those focusing on his Passion.

"Post-biblical" narratives associate the character of Joseph of Arimathea with Barabbas and Mary Magdalene.

The first time in which the character of Joseph of Arimathea was credited in the movies, was in the 1930s, in the French movie Golgotha (1935) and in the British TV play Caesar's Friend (1939). Ever since Joseph of Arimathea becomes a familiar presence in Jesus movies and in general in narratives dealing with the Crucifixion and Burial of Jesus.

María Magdalena, pecadora de Magdala (1946), Barabbas (1953) and The Silver Chalice (1954) offer the first examples of "non-biblical" developments in the presentation of the character.

Since the age of Joseph of Arimathea is not specified in the Gospels, senior and younger actors have played the part.

The first actors to be credited as Joseph of Arimathea were Marcel Chabrier (France, 1935), Brian Oulton (UK, 1939), and Humberto Rodríguez (Mexico, 1942). After WW2, the character has appeared more frequently in Jesus movies. Among those who played the role, are some renowned interpreters, such as Barry Morse, Walter Hampden and Kevin Doyle.
