1940s

News of the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls reached Spain already in the late 1940s, through a series of articles published by A. Toribios Ramos, Federico Perez Castro, J.M. Bauchet and Edmund F. Sutcliffe.

1950s

The interest of Spanish Scholars concentrated in particular on the Pesher Habacuc and the Great Isaiah Scroll, and on the contribution of the Dead Sea Scrolls to the study of Christian Origins.

Several books by international authors were translated into Spanish: Edmund Wilson (in 1956), Vincent and Allegro (in 1957), Burrows (1958), and Yadin (1959).

The only work of Spanish scholarship to reach international audience, was an article by Argentine author J Meija published in 1958 in the first issue of the Revue de Qumran.

1960s

In the 1960s also Spanish scholarship remained confined in the Spanish-speaking world.

1970s

Jose O'Callaghan was the first Spanish Qumran scholar to attract the attention of international audience. When in 1972 he claimed that some Greek fragments from Cave 7 were the earliest manuscript evidence of the Gospel of Mark, his hypothesis sparked a controversy that lasted several years, but also encouraged other Spanish scholars to engage in international debate.

1980s

1990s

The Madrid Qumran Congress of 1991 marked the full entrance of Spanish scholarship in the international arena. Many works of Spnish scholarship were now translated in other languages.
