Paul & Jesus

Overview

THe traditional view of a perfect harmony and continuity between Jesus and Paul was first questioned in the 19th century bu the Tubingen School. Ferdinand Christian Bauer saw in Paul the radical founder of Christianity against the Jerusalem Church of James and Peter, which was in continuity with the teachings of Jesus. In contrast, Harnack saw the difference between Paul and Jesus more in terms of a radical fulfillment by the apostle of the teachings of his Master. Following Bauer, William Wrede established a clear antithesis, Paul or Jesus, as two competitive ways of understanding Christianity.
