Phanuel is in 1 Enoch one of the four angels of the presence, along with Michael, Raphael and Gabriele. He is the angel of repentance. In Jewish mysticism Phanuel is identified with Uriel. In an early Hebrew amulet he is invoked against evil spirits (Thompson, Semitic Magic, p. 161).
In the Sybilline Oracles Phanuel is "one of the 5 angels who know all the evils that men have wrought"
His name also occurs in 4 Ezra and 3 Baruch (misspelled "Phamael")
In the Shepherd of Hermas, Phanuel is identified with the Shepherd.
In Ethiopia a holy day of the "archangel Phanuel" is celebrated on the 3rd day of Taxsas.
