Overview
In spite of the popularity of the character in literature and music, very rarely Mariamne appears in works of art. The first portraits are illuminations in mss. of Boccaccio's De mulieribus claris. At the end of the 19th cent, we have two remarkable paintings, by English artists. The first, by Edward William John Hopley (1865), is still very neo-classical in style, while the second, by John William Waterhouse (1887), shows the transition to Orientalism.
