Translations of the Bible into Albanian language have appeared since the 18th century.

Overview

The first known translation of the New Testament into Albanian is the so-called Elbasan Gospel Manuscript. The manuscript was written in 1761, probably the work of Gregory of Durrës, the Metropolitan (archbishop) of the Archdiocese of Durrës.

In 1821 Vangjel Meksi was the author of the first printed translation of the New Testament into Albanian.

Between the 1860s and the 1880s, Konstandin Kristoforidhi published a series of translations of the New Testament and other Biblical books into Albanian.

The first edition of the whole Bible in Albanian was published only in 1994, after the fall of the Communist regime, by the Catholic priest Simon Filipaj; see Besëlidhja e Vjeter dhe Besëlidhja e Re (1994 Filipaj), book.
